Our June
berry box lantern demonstration at the Avondale Art fair was great fun
– 7 of us showed folks how to transform the wooden boxes
into summer lanterns.
Our
July “GREEN
Basketry" Selections exhibition at Scott Manor House,
Bedford was good – thank you to all
who participated, especially Salyne Ting-Eo for demonstrating her paper
bead and flower making as well as her beautiful baby boy.
Some
of us went to the Wallace and Area Museum to view
their incredible
basket collection. That shoreline has a growing number of
interesting places to visit, including the Creamery Centre in
Tatamagouche.
On
July 22, Donna Silvert and Lois Murray demonstrated at the NSDCC summer
market in Victoria Park in Halifax while Joleen demonstrated
Acadian basketmaking at Grand Pré National Park – basketry on
both coasts of
Nova Scotia in brilliant hot sunshine!
During
the April exhibition, we received several packages of reed from folks
doing their spring-cleaning, plus later a reed-spotting
member on vacation. Members Pat Othen and Donna Silvert have
sorted the reed, looked through basketry books and come up with a
series of exciting reed baskets classes for the fall. Sign up
and explore new ways of weaving with this material.
NEWS:
We
have heard from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that the Asian
Emerald Ash Borer Beetle has yet to be found in Nova Scotia – good news
for our ash trees and basketry. DON’T MOVE FIREWOOD!
– the
main cause of spreading this pest.
MORE
NEWS:
Heather
(Gordon) McLean has launched a Facebook page
for the Guild, we hope that this entry into
the social
media will find the young basketmakers out in our communities
and encourage them to join us. Thank you Heather for getting
the site set-up and for agreeing to maintain it for the Guild.

Mi'kmaq Basket
with Greg McEwan
We
are
fortunate to have Greg and his partner Margaret returning this
September to teach us another Mi'kmaq basket they have designed
especially for this class. Learn how the Mi'kmaq hand pound,
split and shave White Ash to make weaving strips. You will
use these strips to create your own lidded basket 7x7x10" high with a
square bottom, rounded vase-like sides using coloured strips and a
raised-weave Periwinkle design. The lid will be woven in the
round Mi'kmaq star pattern known as Kloqowej. A beautiful
basket!

if you don't have any.
