The Manors Project

In summer of 2013 Chebucto Community Net brought online the first low-cost non-profit public-run residential highspeed service in Eastern Canada and the first ubiquitous residential wireless access in Atlantic Canada, funded by the donations of individual members from the Board of Directors of Chebucto Community Net.

We currently provide this service at Joseph Howe Manor, 5515 Victoria Road in Halifax and HP MacKeen Manor, 1186 Queen Street. These buildings are public-owned low-income seniors housing units.

Chebucto Wireless is an 802.11n wireless connection operating at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with a symmetrical 15 Mbps download and upload speed. It uses WPA2 Enterprise AES encryption with EAP/PEAP MSChapV2 username and password authentication.

Thanks to a grant from CIRA Chebucto Wireless access has been installed at Ahern Manor, 2313 Gottingen Street and Sunrise Manor, 2406 Gottingen Street. The service is not active at this time, waiting for the other end of the connection, at Dalhousie University's Tupper Building to be built. Once installed, this network will require several weeks of testing and configuration before it can accept users. A meeting for residents will be announced when the service is able to accept new users from Ahern and Sunrise Manors.

A second grant from ACORN-NS, the Atlantic Canada Organization of Research Networks is funding an expansion of the Chebucto Wireless service to Gordon B Isnor Manor, 5565 Cornwallis Street. This will be under construction in early 2017.

We are seeking public support and funding to expand this service into more low-income Manors in Metro Halifax.

Stay tuned!
