The Neptune Youth Performance Company
was established in 1992 to fulfil the need of those
students who are ready for a performance opportunity not
offered them in the general community. The idea is to
train the young actors over the period of a year in the
areas of voice, movement and characterization. The goal
at the end of the year will be a performance on the
Neptune Mainstage. The production will run 10 days:
Theatre by young people for young people.
In the spring, auditions are held in Halifax for any
young person ages 12 to 18. There are individual auditions
and then invitations are extended by the Artistic
Director to attend the callbacks. The final cut for the
Company is made at this audition.
The emphasis of the training is on the "whole" individual.
Theatre training provides self-discipline, social
interaction skill, good study habits, as well as teaching
the individual the skills to sustain a continued run of
the same play. There are no stars. Acting is a team
effort. All of the pieces come together to create the
finished product. The students are treated by their
instructors in the same manner as they would a
professional actor, and they expect quality results. It is
a challenging experience but one that will leave the
young actors feeling like they really have accomplished
something important. Which they have!
The following quotes are commenting on NARNIA.
The past two years the Company has enjoyed performing this
holiday special.
" the young actors threw themselves
into the play with so much gusto and commitment that the
world of Narnia came alive as soon as they stepped out of
the wardrobe." - The Daily News by Ron Foley
MacDonald
" Everything is thoroughly done here
: the acting, the layers of meaning, the production values
.... [the director] Her passion and commitment have
carried over to the teen actors. They focus their bursting
energy and talent into a laser's piercing light." -
The Halifax Herald by Elissa Barnard
