OANS Orienteering Information
The Rabbit Chase Orienteering Challenge
Will you be the one to earn the title of Fastest Rabbit - and then keep it in the Grand Finale as the hounds chase you down? Or will the hounds catch the rabbit and race to the finish? The only way to find out is to compete over 4 Wednesday evenings in this orienteering competition across the HRM this fall. Each Wednesday event will be a different format and in a different local park, a true challenge for your full orienteering skills. Sept. 24th Fleming Park Score - Registration is only $20 - Start-time 6pm. If you are unable to attend all of the events you can still compete and win. You also have the opportunity to drop your worst result from the first 3 events to improve your placing.
1. There is only one category in which all competitors will compete. You may enter as individuals or in groups of two. 2. Points will be awarded at each of the Three Preliminary events as follows: 1st place - 1 pt 3. Points for each competitor will be totaled for all three preliminary events. The competitor with the lowest number of points will earn the title of 'Rabbit' for the Grand Finale. All the other competitors will be designated as 'Hounds' in the Grand Finale. 4. The 'Rabbit' will start first on the Grand Finale Course. The number of minutes each 'Hound' will start behind the 'Rabbit' will be based on how many more points that 'Hound' accumulated compared to the 'Rabbit' over the three preliminary events. 0-5 more points = +2 minutes start after 'Rabbit' E.g. if the 'Rabbit' has 6 points in the preliminary events and another competitor has accumulated a total of 15 points, then that 'Hound' has 9 more points than the 'Rabbit' and will start 4 minutes after the 'Rabbit' in the Grand Finale. 5. If two or more competitors tie with the lowest number of points after the three preliminary events, then the competitor with the best finish in the 3rd preliminary race will be named the 'Rabbit'. 6. After the 3rd prelim. event, a competitor may drop their worst result and the points from that event. However, a penalty control will be added to their route in the Grand Finale. A competitor may still earn the title of 'Rabbit' even if they drop an event. 7. If a competitor is unable to attend or complete all three preliminary events, then their placing will be based on the other two events but a penalty control will be added to their route in the grand finale. 8. The overall winner will be determined by the results of the Grand
Finale. If the rabbit completes the course without being caught by any
of the hounds, then they are considered the champion. If any of the hounds
catch the rabbit - then the rabbit is considered dead and is out of the
competition. In this case the first hound to successfully complete the
course and cross the finish line is named champion.
