Obituary

David Norman Hunter
March 7, 1953 - December 12, 2016

David Norman Hunter, age 63, of Hammonds Plains, NS, passed away at home on Monday, December 12, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. David is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Hunter (Swain) of Halifax and his father, Donald Hunter, originally of Saint John, NB.

David was born in Fredericton, NB, on March 7, 1953. He spent his first 13 years in Fredericton and attended Nashwaaksis Memorial School. His family moved to Halifax in 1966 when his father was transferred. David graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in 1971 and continued his education to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of King's College in 1974 and a Master of Business Administration from Dalhousie University in 1976. He further studied to become a Certified Management Accountant / Chartered Professional Accountant.

Upon graduation from university, David accepted a position with Revenue Canada and moved to Ottawa. Eventually returning to Halifax, David worked as a tax auditor and traveled extensively with his job. He retired after 35 years as a Team Leader-International Audit.

David was always an avid collector of music. His interest in music encompassed mainstream pop to classical. He was always happiest to have friends drop by for an evening dinner party and drinks, with serious rounds of "Name that Tune" with the most obscure song titles from the '60's. Once he retired, David enjoyed living in his new home in Hammonds Plains. He took pleasure in the companionship of his neighbors and enjoyed the quiet setting amongst the trees. He finally fulfilled his dream of having a dog and named him Christopher. The two were inseparable, and Christopher was with David, close by, at his time of passing.

David is survived by his brother, Lee (Julie Montgomery), of Stowe, VT, his half-sister Susan Hunter (Al Thorley), of East Wallace, NS, and his nephew Alex Hunter of Brooklyn, NY.

Visitation was on Friday, December 16, at All Saints Cathedral on Tower Road in Halifax. A memorial service was held at the Cathedral on the following day. The Very Rev'd Paul W. Smith officiated.

The family thanks the support team at the Palliative Care Unit at Victoria General Hospital and the Victorian Order of Nurses for the care and assistance they provided David through the critical times, right to the final stages of his life. Special thanks to Devon Hennigar for his kindness and direction.

They also thank the staff at RJF Homecare, who made possible David's wish to spend his final days at home. Thanks to Raylene, Mark, and Jessie, and special thanks to Chris, who not only helped David through these difficult times but truly became a good friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences can be made by visiting:www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
