DOMPIERRE, William Ormiston "Bill"

— 57, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2009, after his long struggle with cancer in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Bill was born in Halifax and was the oldest son of the late Ralph and Grace Dompierre. He graduated from Saint Mary's University with his B.A, B.Ed, M.A and later received his M.Ed from Mount Saint Vincent University. Bill started his career briefly with Community Services, then moved on to his teaching career, first at East Hants Rural High and then finishing in the Business Department at the Nova Scotia Community College.

Bill's passion was basketball and especially coaching girls high school basketball. He started coaching with Bedford Minor Basketball, moving to coaching girls at Charles P. Allen, Lockview High and finally Dartmouth High.

Bill was a highly respected Bedford resident. When he needed help with costly medication, he didn't ask for help. Instead, the Bedford Community stepped up to help Bill with an outstanding one day community fundraiser for him in October 2007. Bill was forever grateful to his fellow residents for their outstanding support in this period of health challenges.

Bill loved his family and his wide scope of friends. He loved sports, coaching basketball and his morning coffee with "the boys". Bill welcomed people of all ages to his home. Friends of his sons grew accustomed to his challenging sense of humour and looked forward to matching Bill's wit. Other young people experienced the warmth of Bill and Kim and felt the Dompierre home was their "second home".

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Kim and their sons, Christopher and Matthew; his brother, Greg, sister-in-law, Colleen and niece, Lauren; and his cousin, Jimmy Kelly, New York. Bill was the son-in-law of Gar and Jean Woodworth. He was predeceased by his parents, and brother, David. The family would like to thank Dr. Lori Wood, Dr. David MacNeil, Byron Sarson, Paula Allen and their staffs for their tremendous support. The family would like to also thank the numerous friends and colleagues that visited with his family during his illness. Visitation will be in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. on Wednesday, August 12, from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Bedford United Church. Reception will follow after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Branch, the Lupus Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
