Obituary
Parker Edward "Ed" BACKMAN - Halifax It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Ed Backman, age 69. Ed passed away quickly after a sudden diagnosis of glioblastoma. He will be dearly missed by his spouse, Kathy Attis and daughters, Alison Backman (Andrew Shapiro) of New York City; and Katherine Backman (Tyler Bothwell) of Vancouver; his sister, Gayle Howell and brother Darrell Backman (Shirley Backman); and his loyal dog, Tee. Ed was predeceased by his mother, Marion Backman and father, Parker Backman. Ed was born in Halifax and attended Dalhousie University, living in Ottawa, Hamilton and Montreal before returning to Halifax. He turned his love for sailing and cars into a successful business career, first as the Canadian distributor for J Boats and later as the Dealer Principal of Halifax BMW which he started in 1994 and ran for nearly 20 years. He was an avid sailor out of RNSYS and won many races skippering Trouble, his aptly-named sailboat. Upon retirement in 2013, Ed continued to pursue his passions of boating, travel, hiking and spending time with his family and many close friends. He loved summers at home on St. Margaret’s Bay, hiking in Nova Scotia and the United Kingdom, and spending quality time with family in Antigua. We’d like to thank our devoted friends and family who have supported us throughout this difficult time. Ed, you are truly loved and will be missed by many, always. A memorial will be held at Saraguay House on Tuesday, September 20th at 4 p.m. Donations in Ed’s honour can be made to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust or the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
