No Means NO!
A VIDEO ABOUT SEX ROLE STEREOTYPING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
This video is made by and for teens. It was written and performed by teens to speak to other teens in a format that would be listened to and learned from.No Means NO! is the product of an 18-month peer education project in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia to raise awareness about date and acquaintance rape. The teens involved with the project identified sex role stereotyping as one of the factors leading to sexual assault.
The story centres on a teenage couple. Mike wants to have sex, but Jema does not. Mike's male friends add to his confusion about how to behave by taunting him and giving him tips on how to handle Jema. Jema and her female friends discuss clothes, love, romance and sex. A date later that day ends with Mike sexually assaulting Jema in her parent's living room
No Means NO! skillfully handles this disturbing subject and shows the links between sex role stereotyping and behavior.
The video is eight minutes in length and comes with a facilitator's guide. The guide includes important facts about sexual assault, discussion questions for before and after the video, and a list of other resources available on the topic of date and acquaintance rape.
