The backlog was one of the members having their account hacked and it being used to
generate a large amount of outgoing spam. This places a lot of chaff in the outgoing mail queue
which the legitimate messages must queue up around. When we cleared the outgoing queue of the
spam, within 10-20 minutes first delivery attempts took place for all the legitimately queued
mail.

We have a tech meeting this evening at which we will be reviewing how close
we are to transitioning to the new mail software that has the ability to automatically
detect that authenticated users are generating spam-indicating amounts of outgoing
mail.
