Hi Tony, All cleared up now thanks. It was part and parcel of the mail server troubles over the weekend - whatever that was, it did indeed plug up all entry points. Then again I may have misrepresented the problem somewhat by trying to go into more detail than needed: I know just enough about tech to hang myself sometimes.
