I used Putty when I had the 486 on the net.
My experience using full systems at the library is that I cannot fullyuse
my membershipthrough windows- eg I can't use nicknames for my address book
(ie type "Brendan" and have my son's full e-mail address appear.)

I will be using Win 7 pro 32 bit as the system.
