As some of you know, OWL has been doing basic research work in literacy for a few years. One by-product of this has been a technology that models language within a collection of documents. We believe that this technology holds great promise for organizational training because of its ability to isolate the unique language of an organization, industry, or individual. Employees in many departments move from company to company, often arriving without a complete knowledge of the organizational language. This lack of knowledge creates a unique training challenge. Our technology allows modeled vocabularies to be added and subtracted from each other. Potential uses include understanding how your language differs from your competitors’, testing sales documents to see if they truly talk like the customer does, or identifying prospects who look like your best customers. Language literacy is a basic skill that trainers cannot just assume is there. Well-educated personnel coming from other industries can have real problems understanding organizationally specific language, and the hidden cost of verbal or written communication issues is huge. Look for more details in the future, or call me to discuss this now.

It is no secret that the training industry has been under extreme pressure for the last several years. We have seen hundreds of competitors disappear, along with several major producers. The latest rumor on the street is that Keystone Learning Systems has closed its doors. As many of you know, Keystone is a long-time producer of ours, going back to 1994, and we carry hundreds of their products. While the closure in Utah is true, the company survives. They have consolidated operations in Maryland so there will no disruption in our ability to provide or support these items. OWL continues to thrive because of the support we receive from our customers, and we would like to thank all of you for that.

OWL is currently planning production in partnership with a local studio to create training for receptionists. We are actively seeking input from customers regarding the challenges they have in this area. Your input will help us build the training objectives that will guide this course development. The course is planned to be available sometime later this year.

If you need any assistance finding products to fit your specific requirements or just want to discuss training or technology in general, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Bob Dumouchel
