Timberframe Cabin Construction Workshop

This workshop is open to all who are interested in timberframe
construction. Previous carpentry experience is not required.

What is timberframe construction?
The art of timberframing is as old as our concept of home. This type
of construction consists of a self-supporting framework of timbers,
with interlocking joints fastened by wooden pegs. Timberframing is a
sustainable craft using forest resources wisely. Buildings created
using this method have the potential to last 300-600 years; the time
it takes most trees to reach full maturity.

Timberframing had its start with the invention of the mortise and
tenon joint, somewhere between 500 and 200 B.C. From the 15th to the
18th century it was the dominant wood construction method around the
world leaving thousands of beautiful barns, temples, houses, and
public halls that survive to this day.

Workshop Facilitator - Derek Eagles, Timberframe Designer and Builder
Derek has been designing and constructing timber frame buildings for
over ten years. He lives and works in Hants County, in a hand-
crafted, off-grid timberframe house consisting of salvaged timbers.
