Through a partnership with the Madre Tierra, the Atlantic Council for
International Cooperation would like to fill an internship position that
focuses on a multifaceted community-based approach to global health, placing
emphasis on the intersection between economic, social and environmental
approaches towards promoting sustainable and healthy communities in Canada
and Honduras.

The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation is a unique coalition of
Atlantic Canadian organizations working on international development and
cooperation issues, working together to achieve sustainable global
development in a peaceful and healthy environment, with social justice,
human dignity, and participation for all.

ACIC supports its members in development and developmental education through
collective leadership, networking, information, training and coordination,
and represents their interests when dealing with government and others. ACIC
has 40 members, including national organizations and grassroots
organizations from across the Atlantic Provinces.

Madre Tierra is an affiliate of Friends of the Earth, Honduras. They are a
multidisciplinary voluntary organization that works towards supporting the
self-development and improvement of living conditions among marginalized
indigenous and mestizo communities in Honduras, focusing on aspects related
to health, environment and human rights.

JOB TITLE: Global Environmental Health Promoter

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Canadian component:

The young professional will be involved with assisting in global health
promotion activities, performing the following duties:

-Assist with organizing an event for World AIDS day and other special
events;
-Network among environmental and community organizations in Atlantic Canada;
-Research and understand environmental-related health issues;
-Enhance public understanding of the connection between the environment and
health through public engagement activities, including writing articles for
publications; and
-Newsletter editing, layout and publication for dissemination of this
information.

Overseas component:
The overseas component of the internship will assist with the transfer of
skills and in building capacity through the strengthening of a civil society
organization. The position will emphasize the generation of healthy human
and natural environments through promoting viable economic alternatives in
the following activities:

-Coordinating environmental impact assessment activities;
-Conducting community-based research into the health impacts of mining
operations (mental, physical and developmental) and transgenic connections
between human health and the environment and environmental justice;
-Networking among environmental and community organizations;
-Outreach concerning health-related environmental issues; and,
-Developing public education materials with local communities.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

CIDA requires the intern:
-Be aged 30 or under;
-Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant able to work in Canada; -Be
currently under or unemployed;
-Have not previously worked outside Canada in a paid, career-related
position;
-Be a graduate of a college or university; and,
-Have not previously participated in another Internship Program funded by
the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

The ideal candidate will have:

-Undergraduate degree in international development, environmental studies or
other related field
-Fluency in Spanish
-Background knowledge of environmental health determinants and environmental
impact assessment
-Understanding of social/political/economic reality of Honduras or Central
America
-Experience with forms of participatory education with adults, youth and
children
-Excellent skills in computer software, include Microsoft Publisher, Office;
experience with HTML coding is an asset
-Previous experience with event management is an asset
-Previous travel in Central America is an asset
-Project Management skills and experience an asset

Personal Characteristics:
-Very adaptable, flexible, patient, and open to alternative ways of working
and organizing
-Self-driven, committed to positive change
-Independent, mature, self-starter able to work with minimal supervision
-Relatively good physical health and understanding of physical conditions
for work (urban pollution, heat, sporadic schedules)

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Stipend: $225 per week.

·Other potential training courses as opportunities.

DURATION: 9 months – 4 months in Canada with ACIC and 5 months in Honduras
with Madre Tierra

LOCATION: Halifax, Nova Scotia and Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
