(2) Haitian-Canadian journalist, activist, and author Jean St-Vil will be giving a lecture entitled "Haiti: Fighting Terrorism Before Napoleon I, Beyond Bush II," A historical overview of the current crisis in Haiti Sunday, April 24th Saint Mary's University Sobey Theatre Auditorium (903 Robie St), 7PM FREE Jean Saint-Vil is an Ottawa-based activist within the Haitian diaspora in Canada. He has been a featured commentator on CBC Television's Counterspin, CPAC's Talk Politics, and CBC Radio's The Current. He is also a community radio journalist, an author of several books, and a founder of the Canada Haiti Action Network. Right now, Canada, along with the US and France, is defending an illegitimate and repressive regime in Haiti. One year ago, on the 200-year anniversary of Haiti's independence from enslavement by French colonizers,Jean Bertrand-Aristide, the democratically elected leader of Haiti, was ousted from power in a brutal coup. Mounting evidence indicates that Canadian, American, and French military forces played a role in carrying out this coup. Aristide has repeatedly claimed that he was kidnapped by US Marines and was forced to board, at gunpoint, a US plane bound for the Central African Republic. (3) Concerned citizens are invited to attend a talk on Water taking place on Thursday, May 05, 2005 at 7:00pm in the Spring Garden Public Library. Dr. Janet Eaton will be speaking on Water Privatization and Commodification within the Context of Corporate Globalization. This talk examines, from an activist's perspective, the nature and impacts of the present rush to sell bottled water, and export water in bulk along with the rampant neo-liberal thrust to privatize water services around the globe. This event is the third presentation in the three-part Globalization Series organized and sponsored by the Halifax Chapter of the Council of Canadians and the Spring Garden Public Library. For more information about the event, please visit www.halifaxlibraries.ca, or www.canadians.org for information about The Council of Canadians, how to become involved and for further information about water issues.
