ORGANIZATION  

The Ecology Action Centre is the oldest environmental 
organization in Nova Scotia and has been in existence since 
1971.  Currently, the Ecology Action Centre has 750 
members, 150 active volunteers and seven issue 
committees, focusing on transportation, wilderness 
preservation and forestry, coastal issues, urban planning, 
renewable energy, agriculture and food, and marine 
conservation.  Ecology Action Centre's mission is to 
encourage a society in Nova Scotia which respects and 
protects nature and also provides environmentally and 
economically sustainable jobs for its citizens. 

The Ecology Action Centre's Standing Tall forestry 
campaign aims to promote balanced and fair opportunities 
for public input into forest policy development. It seeks to 
bring about a gradual and feasible shift from clearcutting to 
more uneven-aged and lower impact harvesting practices 
appropriate for maintaining and restoring the diverse values 
of our Acadian forest ecosystems.  

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

The research and outreach coordinator will prepare a series 
of research reports and fact sheets and make presentations 
to interested groups, industry and government. Workshops 
and meetings with members of the public, the forestry 
sector, affiliated environmental groups and the government 
will provide a milieu in which debate and discussion may 
take place.   

This position will contribute to creating a strong, accessible 
research base that will make the case for ecologically 
sustainable forestry.

The researcher and outreach coordinator will work with the 
Standing Tall campaign coordinator at the Ecology Action 
Centre in Halifax.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Research: in-library and web-based research; interviews 
2. Writing: produce scientific reviews, resource documents, 
and fact sheets; generate press releases
3.  Other Campaign activities: organize workshops, 
meetings and other events; coalition-building; 
presentations, outreach and media relations

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

16-18 months, depending on salary. Full-time employment 
is preferred, but part-time (60% or more) is an option.

SALARY

Salary $30,000 - $35,000; commensurate with experience

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED:

- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to 
write for a variety of audiences
- Excellent research skills using a wide variety of sources; 
attention to detail
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Familiarity with Nova Scotia forest policy and forestry 
practices 
- Interest in and knowledge of forest conservation 
- Creativity and ability to take initiative
- Team oriented, motivated, and conscientious
- Proficient with MS Word, Excel, e-mail, internet, all 
within a PC environment 
- Must be available to travel and work periodically on 
evenings and week-ends
