Saint Mary's University has an opportunity to host some of the people affected by mining in Guatemala and Colombia. The aim of the tour is to raise awareness through public events as well as meetings with politicians, businesses, media and power companies. Mining practices around the world have had a devastating impact on the environment as well as human rights. The speakers are part of a maritime-wide tour entitled "Mining the Connections". The speakers are: Jose Manual Chacon (Filochfo) - a nationally revered Guatemalan political cartoonist who works with Madre Selva, an environmental organization advising local communities in the San Marcos area opposing the Glamis Gold mine. Francisco Ramirez - President of the Colombian Mine Workers' Union - who has faced five attempts on his life as he responds to the links between human rights violations and mining interests in the North-eastern part of Colombia.
