to raise awareness through public events as well as meetings with
politicians, businesses, media and power companies. Mining practices around
the world have had a devastating impact on the environment as well as human
rights.

The speakers are part of a maritime-wide tour entitled "Mining the
Connections".
The speakers are:
Jose Manual Chacon (Filochfo) - a nationally revered Guatemalan
political cartoonist who works with Madre Selva, an environmental
organization advising local communities in the San Marcos area
opposing the Glamis Gold mine.
Francisco Ramirez - President of the Colombian Mine Workers'
Union - who has faced five attempts on his life as he responds to
the links between human rights violations and mining interests in
the North-eastern part of Colombia.
Garry Leech - Journalist, editor of Colombia Journal online, and
author of the book Killing Peace: Colombia's Conflict and the
Failure of U.S. Intervention - who has recently moved to Cape Breton
