Hello, The Dalhousie School of Planning is hosting a conference on winter planning from Feb 10 - 12, 2005. We will explore issues of transportation, energy, housing and recreation and how we can better plan to take advantage of our northern climate. Registration is free, but space is filling up fast. To register, or for more information, contact Jaspal Marwah at the School of Planning: email: jmarwah@dal.ca fax: (902) 423-6672 Information available online at: http://architectureandplanning.dal.ca/planning/news/index.shtml#ww Below is a brief introduction to the Welcoming Winter conference. WELCOMING WINTER: CHANGING THE CLIMATE OF PLANNING "We live in Canada and that means we live in cold weather for much of the year. Why then are houses in the north built like we live in the south? Why do we plan our communities as if summer lasts all year? In Atlantic Canada, we experience some of our most extreme weather conditions during the winter. Our winter weather includes brilliant (but biting) sunshine, cold rain, driving sleet, and blinding blizzards that leave us with piles of snow. Winter can last a long time –anywhere from six to eight months. However, communities in this region are planned and designed as if we live in a warmer climate. How can we plan for more liveable, enjoyable and comfortable winter communities? How can planning and design better respond to energy use, outdoor activity and year-round active transportation, regardless of the weather? With Welcoming Winter: Changing the Climate of Planning we will consider and learn how to plan and design for our winter reality." Thanks!
