I'm not sure if the following is relevant to Maritimers, but sust-mar
traffic has been slow lately ... :)

Subject: ECOLOGY NORTH AND C-CIARN

*Ecology North recently became the host of the Candian Climate Impacts
and Adaption Research Network in the NWT (C-CIARN)*. C-CIARN is a
cross Canada network that brings researchers together with decision
makers from industry, government, aboriginal, and non-governmental
organizations to address key issues of understanding and adapting to our
changing climate. C-CIARN has co-ordinators in each province and
territory along with a number of co-ordinators for the major sectors
such health, fisheries, agriculture and forestry.

Ecology North along with the Yukon College in Whitehorse and the
Nunuavut Research Institute in Iqaluit form C-CIARN North.
We would like to bring to your attention two upcoming climate change
related activities:

1. On-line workshop on Climate Change and Environmental Assessment Jan.
24-28, 2005

2. 2. Summer School Aboard Russian Icebreaker - "Climate Change in
the Arctic Ocean"
6-28 September 2005 - deadline for appliacation February 28, 2005.

For more information on these activities please see below:

1. Climate Change and Environmental Assessment
Jan. 24-28, 2005

To register, contact C-CIARN North manager John Streicker,
jstreick@yukoncollege.yk.ca

Background information is available at
http://www.taiga.net/c-ciarn-north/online4.html

The effects of global climate change are increasingly apparent in the
North. How can we accommodate those and future effects when assessing
the impacts of development projects? What tools are available to help
us? Can we help each other?

Please join us online during the week of January 24 to 28, 2005, to
discuss issues related to climate change and environmental assessment.

As with C-CIARN North's previous online workshops, the discussion will
take place on a forum provided by CPIN, the web service of the Canadian
Polar Commission.

2. Summer School Aboard Russian Icebreaker
"Climate Change in the Arctic Ocean"
6-28 September 2005

Application Deadline: Monday, 28 February 2005

-------------------------------------
The International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks (USA) in cooperation with Laval University (Canada), the
Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (Russia), and the Obukhov
Institute of Atmospheric Physics (Russia) invite the participation of
graduate students and early career scientists in the Summer School
"Climate Change in the Arctic Ocean," to be held 6-28 September 2005
aboard the Russian icebreaker "Kapitan Dranitsyn" during its fourth
scientific cruise to the Arctic Ocean. Leading invited scientists will
address a wide spectrum of polar disciplines from oceanography and
meteorology to biology, chemistry, and Arctic paleoclimate. In addition
to the opportunities for learning and professional training that are
provided by a traditional onshore educational system, the students
aboard the icebreaker will have a unique chance to experience arctic
exploration to acquire invaluable skills in oceanographic field work
under harsh arctic conditions, and to gain a better understanding of how
scientific observations are organized in practice. Students will learn
first-hand about oceanographic, biochemical, ice, and meteorological
observations in the dynamically rich area of the Arctic. Working with an
international team of experienced polar researchers will provide an
excellent opportunity to learn more about modern methods of
high-latitude observations and analysis, and to personally participate
in the study of the fast-changing Arctic environment.

Limited funds are available to provide accommodation aboard the
icebreaker, meals, and travel to and from Kirkenes, Norway where the
cruise starts and ends. Selection criteria will include the strength of
an applicant's academic background and a supporting letter of
recommendation. Please send a cover letter describing relevance of the
summer school to your career plans, cv including your academic and
research background, and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor
to:
