Thanks! ____________________________________________________________________________ . FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 25, 2004 100 NS SCHOOLS DO THE WALK The results show walking to school is cool. One hundred schools across Nova Scotia participated in International Walk to School Week from October 4 to 8. An estimated 25,500 students walked or wheeled to school along with parents, school staff and community members. A total of 2100 schools participated in the event across Canada, joining 36 countries world-wide to raise awareness about health, traffic safety and the environment. In an award ceremony today Sacred Heart School of Halifax received national recognition for participating in Walk to School Week. Winning one of three prizes in a country-wide draw, the school accepted $500.00 from Go for Green, educational board games from Intelli-KidT and other prizes for students. On Walk to School Day (Oct. 6) all 230 elementary students participated along with staff and parents. For those Nova Scotian schools with high participation rates, there were three provincial prize draws. St. Joseph Elementary in Sydney Mines won a bike rack from Timbertec Inc. along with board games and prizes for students. Shipyard Elementary in Sydney won step counters from KellogsT and George Bissett Elementary in Halifax won reflective arm bands from 3MT for all students. One simple action of walking or cycling benefits both individuals and the community. It improves student health through increased physical activity, reduces traffic congestion around schools and reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from cars. "If we can demonstrate it's possible to walk to school for just one day out of the year," says Janet Barlow, Coordinator of Active & Safe Routes to School, "then maybe we can convince people it's possible once a month, once a week or even every day." International Walk to School Week is an initiative of Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS), a national Go for Green program encouraging the use of active modes of transportation to and from school. In Nova Scotia, ASRTS is coordinated by the Ecology Action Centre in partnership with the Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation Division. -30- For more information contact Janet Barlow at: (902) 442-5055 or asrts@ecologyaction.ca ____________________________________________________________________________ Did a friend forward this to you?
