Once again, we are selling beautiful, chemical-free Christmas trees and wreaths -- grown without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Get them for yourself, your friends or family! We have two new tree suppliers this year, too. To order yours, visit our table at the Halifax Farmer's Market any of these four Saturdays: Nov. 13, 20, 27 and Dec. 4. Or give us a call at 429-2202. Or, print the order form at http://www.ecologyaction.ca and fax, mail or drop it off. Please order by Dec. 3 (or Dec. 4 at the market). Tree pick-up day this year will be Sat. Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Pier 20 behind the Westin Hotel in Halifax. Wreaths can be picked up separately at the market, or with your tree at Pier 20. EAC GIFT MEMBERSHIPS Looking for a unique gift? Give a gift that helps Nova Scotia's land, water and environment! Recipients will receive a one year membership certificate, a subscription to our new and improved quarterly magazine - Between the Issues - and the opportunity to participate in Nova Scotia's largest and most active environmental organization! Just give us a call at (902) 429-2202, or drop by at any time (M-F, 9am-5pm). Membership prices: Student/Senior: $15; Regular: $30; Family/Contributing: $50; Supporting: $75; Sustaining: $120. THE GIFT OF LIGHT Looking for stocking stuffers? Why not stop by EAC and pick up a handful of compact fluorescent (CF) light bulbs? They use 75-90% less energy than comparable incandescent bulbs. This cuts down on GHG emissions -- in NS we get over 70% of our electricity from coal. Also, each bulb can save you up to $60 in energy costs! Plus, you'll be helping support the Energy Committee at EAC. CYCLE & RECYCLE CALENDAR 2005-2011-2022 This unique gift is attractive, interesting and inspiring! Two-wheeled transportation is healthy for people, communities, and the planet. Also available: TRAX bumper stickers -- "My other car is a bicycle". All these and more are available at the Ecology Action Centre (Mon. - Fri., 9am - 5pm). Or during our Open House, Thurs. Nov. 25, 4pm - 7pm, details below. We're in downtown Halifax, 1568 Argyle Street (at the corner of Blowers, 3rd floor, above the 'Subway'). Also available on tree pickup day, Sat. Dec. 11, at Pier 20, details above. More information: (902) 429-2202. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (2) EAC & PROJECT UPDATES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOME HOPE FOR THE COAST The Nova Scotia Coastal Coalition hosted a workshop called "Changing Tides: Towards a coastal protection strategy for Nova Scotia" in Cornwallis, NS from Nov. 5-7, 2004. This action-oriented event brought together over forty groups and individuals to take the first steps in developing a strategic plan for coastal protection in Nova Scotia. The EAC's Coastal Issues Committee is a founding member of the Coastal Coalition, and was a key sponsor and organizer of the event. For more information: http://www.ecologyaction.ca/coastal_issues/coastal_issues.shtm coastal@ecologyaction.ca URBAN ISSUES -- APPEAL THE 17-STORY HALIFAX TOWER Contrary to HRM staff recommendations and Municipal Planning Strategy, Peninsula Community Council voted to allow a 17-story building on Grafton Street. Any building in this area below the Citadel should have a maximum of four to seven stories. We encourage you to assist with the EAC presentation at the public hearings in January, or speak out as an individual. For more information: Graham Read, gcread@chebucto.ns.ca 479-1375 or Susanna Cheng, trax@ecologyaction.ca , tel. (902) 429-2202.
