Through a partnership with the Ecology Action Centre and the Fundacion
Rainforest Rescue (FURARE), the Atlantic Council for International
Cooperation (ACIC) would like to fill an internship position, which focuses
sustainable forestry issues and endangered species education.

The Ecology Action Centre has been an active advocate, protecting the
environment since 1971. The Centre's earliest projects included recycling,
composting, and energy conservation, and these are now widely recognized
environmental issues.

The Rainforest Rescue (FURARE) seeks, through active intervention, to
salvage or rescue species threatened with imminent extinction by
human-created activities of landscape destruction; maintain collections of
such species and conduct research on their conservation and microhabitat
needs; encourage forest restoration and other silvicultural practices which
include these species in their planting regimes; and help alleviate the
pressure on wild stocks caused by national and international trade.  Web:

Project Description:

This project focuses upon Standing Tall Campaign (Sustainable Forestry) and
the Public Lands Coalition, as well as education on endangered species. The
intern will work with the Wilderness Committee members of EAC for project
initiation.

Canadian component:
The young professional will be responsible for assisting the Wilderness
Committee with activities to help mobilize support for environmental
education and advocacy through:
-Assisting campaign managers with required special events tasks;
-Assisting with the development of resource materials;
-Assisting the Forestry Coordinator of the Standing Tall Campaign by
providing research and outreach assistance;
-Attending meetings of Wilderness Committee and related sub committees; and
-Managing communications for the Wilderness Committee.


Overseas component:
The intern will be involved with assisting the organization in education and
capacity building needs regarding sustainable forestry, and private/public
land conservation, as well as endangered species protection. This will be
accomplished through:

-Creating educational and promotional materials to engage local communities
in participatory research;
-Project development in sustainable forestry, endangered species awareness
and public education;
-Assisting with the development of resource materials; and assisting senior
staff with campaign implementation; and
-Assisting with the day-to-day tasks of running an environmental NGO.

Job Qualifications:

CIDA requires the intern:

-Be aged 30 or under;
-Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant able to work in Canada; -Be
currently under or unemployed;
-Have not previously worked outside Canada in a paid, career-related
position;
-Be a graduate of a college or university; and,
-Have not previously participated in another Internship Program funded by
the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

The ideal candidate will have:

-Undergraduate degree in international studies, or other related field
-Experience working as a paid or volunteer staff person for a related
non-profit organization/s
-Fluency in Spanish
-Strong research and writing skills
-An understanding of sustainable forestry issues
-Independent, mature, self-starter able to work with minimal supervision
-Previous international travel is an asset


SALARY AND BENEFITS

Stipend: $200 per week.

DURATION: 34 weeks – 12 weeks in Canada with the Ecology Action Centre and
20 weeks in Ecuador with FURARE.

LOCATION: Halifax, Nova Scotia and Quite, Ecuador.
