Adaptation to Climate Change in Atlantic Canada with respect to Ecosystems,
Protected Areas, and Ecotourism (C-CIARN Atlantic's Fourth Regional
Workshop)

Are you concerned about how climate change may impact nature in Atlantic
Canada? Should we be planning strategies to adapt to these changes? The
Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network will be hosting a
free two-day workshop on adapting to climate change, focusing on ecosystems,
protected areas, and ecotourism, in the Atlantic Provinces. The workshop
will be held at the Glenghorm Beach Resort in Ingonish, Cape Breton on
September 27-28, and I encourage you to attend.

This workshop will not debate the causes of climate change or what can be
done to prevent it, but will instead focus on adapting to the potential
impacts of climate change on wildlife, biodiversity, ecosystems, parks,
protected areas, and ecotourism in Atlantic Canada. The Atlantic Provinces
may be particularly hard hit by rising sea level, extreme weather events,
and coastal erosion as a result of climate change. Freshwater resources may
become scarcer, and there may be changes in species diversity. Changes in
temperature ranges and precipitation amounts will also likely affect
ecosystems, protected areas, and ecotourism in the region.

This two-day workshop will bring together researches, policy makers, and
stakeholders from throughout the Atlantic Region to discuss the potential
impacts of climate change on Atlantic Canada and explore adaptation
strategies. Researchers will present examples of climate change
vulnerabilities and adaptation opportunities. Other presentations will
include the design of parks and protected areas while keeping in mind
adaptation to climate change, as well as species at risk under climate
change. Regional academic and industry ecotourism experts will discuss how
they see their field adapting to climate change.

More information is available on the web at
http://www.dal.ca/~cciarn/workshop4.html. If you intend to attend, please
pre-register online by September 19 to avoid the registration fee. Also note
that the deadline for hotel reservations at the preferred rate is September
13. Travel and accommodation assistance may be available to those who
require it. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
