RESIDENTS PROTEST WORM HUNTING ON LOCAL BEACHES

HALIFAX - A citizen's group in Hants County took their campaign against the commercial harvesting of worms for sportfishing to the beach Friday during an organized protest.

The Hants Shore Concerned Citizens Action Group said they were concerned that the year-round harvesting of bloodworms along the mudflats section of Cheverie Beach was destroying the natural habitat.

In 2002 the Department of Fisheries and Oceans approved exploratory licences for marine worm harvesting along the south and west shores of Nova Scotia which includes beaches in Hants County.

According to information on the DFO website, more than $4-million worth of worms are harvested in the province every year for use largely in sport fishing in the U.S.

But residents in the West Hants area have claimed the licence holders are upsetting the natural habitat and destroying the beach as they turn up land in their hunt for the prized worm.

Hazel Dill, who heads the Hants Shore group, is asking the federal government should reverse their decision to issue licences.
