According to this report, Navy sonar and sonar used in oil and gas exploration may has a significant impact on large whales. It is believed the sonar may cause bubbles in the animals' tissue similar to "the bends" suffered by human divers. Use of sonar has been documented to cause tha mass stampede of whales into shallow waters, and death.

The International Whaling Commission says there is evidence that human noise threatens marine mammals.
