Location: Based at NSCC - Annapolis Valley Campus, Middleton Employment Type: Contract Position - Full time, 40 hours per week. Flexible hours (includes some weekend and evening work). Accountability: SNBRA Communications Committee, SNBRA Board of Directors Rate of Pay: $6.50 to $10.50 per hour commensurate with experience. Deadline for applications: Monday, April 26 2004. Background & Purpose: The Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve Association (SNBRA) is a non-profit organization of volunteers from different sectors. It formed to establish a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve incorporating Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site and the Tobeatic Wilderness Area as the core protected area. Since the designation of the SNBR in 2001, the association has been working with the five counties surrounding the core area to garner further support, invite public involvement and develop strategic and cooperation plans for the reserve. In recognition of this cooperation and the support of the Provincial and Federal Governments, the association is preparing a public open house celebration scheduled for Spring 2004 as well as outreach throughout Southwest Nova Scotia throughout the summer. The association will also be hosting the annual general meeting of the Canadian Biosphere Reserve Association (CBRA). Job Summary: The primary purpose of the position is to coordinate the planning, set up and execution of the CBRA Annual General Meeting and Biosphere Reserve Open House Celebrations. This position will be supported by an already established communications committee. The position will work in consultation with this committee. On a day-to-day basis, the candidate will report to Bob Maher, Chair of the Board of SNBRA and be based at the NSCC Middleton Campus. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Preparing an invitation list and sending invitations. 2. Confirming and refining logistics for all events. 3. Planning activities for the Open House Celebrations. 4. Preparing media materials and presentation materials for the Celebrations, including press releases, display / exhibit materials, speaking notes, media kits and a public service announcement. 5. Attending all meetings of the association. 6. Administrative Duties, including correspondence, database management, research and calls. 7. Overnight travel as needed and representation of SNBRA in an outreach capacity at regional events. 8. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1• Demonstrated experience in event planning. 2• Familiarity with media relations and writing press releases, speaking notes, writing public service announcements. 3• Ability to work independently on goals with the email and telephone support of the communications committee and day-to-day supervision of the Chair of the SNBRA Board. 4• Ability to manage time efficiently, handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. 5• Personable, reliable and able to take initiative. 6• As initial point of contact, ability to represent SNBRA to persons outside the organization in a professional and courteous manner via phone and in person. 7• An understanding of and interest in promoting Biosphere Reserves and sustainable development. 8• Strong communication skills: written and verbal. 9• Bilingualism (English / French) considered an asset. 10• Demonstrated teamwork skills. 11• Excellent organizational skills and excellent attention to detail. 12• Proficiency with computers. 13• Must have valid Drivers License (and access to vehicle). Other requirements: This position is made available through the Summer Career Placements (SCP) initiative of the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). Eligible Participants for the position must: 1. Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusively) at the time of intake/selection; 2. Have been registered as full time students in the previous academic year, and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; 3. Be students in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program, but not attending full-time classes while participating in their placement; 4. Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; 5. Students on work visas are not eligible; 6. Be legally entitled to work according to the provincial legislation and regulations; 7. Not hold another full-time (30 or more hours) summer job.
