An awards luncheon to honour the winners will be held April 27th at the Brightwood Golf and Country Club in Dartmouth. Environmental educator and broadcaster Richard Zurawski will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon. In order to recognize the achievements of innovative and progressive Nova Scotians, RRFB Nova Scotia welcomes nominations up until March 15th for the following Awards: Business of the Year - Open to public and private sector organizations that demonstrate: * Leadership in waste-resource management * Innovation in diverting materials from the waste stream * Green procurement policies * Significant diversion of waste * Using recycled content in end-use products Institution of the Year - Open to public and private sector institutions that demonstrate: * Leadership in waste-resource management * Creativity in diverting materials from the waste stream * Green procurement policies * Significant diversion of waste Industry Steward of the Year - Open to public and private sector industries or associations that demonstrate: * Leadership in waste-resource management * Acceptance of responsibility for waste generated through their industry's manufacturing or marketing of products. Innovation in Waste Reduction - Open to individuals from private or public organizations that demonstrate: * Job creation or development of products manufactured from waste-resource materials * Innovative technology * Entrepreneurial spirit Waste Reduction Education - open to individuals, groups or municipalities that demonstrate: * Most creative and effective environmental education approach * Development of creative environmental resource materials Individual Excellence in Waste Reduction - open to individuals that demonstrate: * Leadership and commitment to the field of solid waste-resource management * Motivating others to participate in waste reduction, reuse, recycling or composting initiatives * Vision in significantly reducing waste from disposal Region of the Year - open to Solid Waste-Resource Management Regions that demonstrate: * Innovative waste diversion programs * Significant diversion of waste * Commitment and effort in developing best practices in solid waste-resource management ENVIRO-DEPOT of the Year - open to Enviro-Depots that demonstrate: * Creative marketing and education ideas * High product quality * Most efficient and accurate reporting * Excellent customer service Tire Retailer of the Year - open to Registered Tire Retailers that demonstrate: * Most efficient and accurate reporting * Excellent Customer service School of the Year - open to all Nova Scotia schools that demonstrate: * Proactive environmental education * Involvement of students in waste-resource management programs * Significant diversion of waste Best Community-Based Project - open to not-for-profit organizations that demonstrate: * A significant number of people involved and/or impacted by a community environmental project * Greatest volume of waste reduced through the project and/or creation of innovative end-products Volunteer of the Year - open to individual volunteers who demonstrate: * Commitment to environmental projects and organizations * Motivating others to participate in waste reduction, reuse, recycling or composting initiatives Hauler of the Year - open to individual and corporate waste haulers that demonstrate: * Best customer service practices * Promotion of waste source separation * Multiple waste stream collection * Excellent safety standards Nominating Rules and Procedures Nominations must be based on initiatives that occurred within the past year. Nominees for all categories must reside in Nova Scotia. Nominees for all corporate categories must have conducted business in Nova Scotia within the last year. Consideration will be given to nominees that demonstrate a strong social and environmental conscience. Nominees may qualify for any or all of the award criteria. Awards will be presented in a category only if a nomination merits an award. Nominees must consent to the nomination. All nominations must be accompanied by a brief summary outlining why the nominee qualifies for the award (500 word maximum). Where applicable, quantities of material diverted from the landfill and sample products or educational materials developed should also be included. Deadline for Nominations Nominations must be postmarked by Monday, March 15, 2004.
