Dear Fellow Environmentalists and Community Minded People in HRM

You may have heard about the Public Consultation that HRM held Monday
night on planning in HRM and the 90 day moratorium on development. The
vast majority in attendance were vehemently opposed to the moratorium and
any freeze. Speaker after speaker lambasted the HRM planning. There were
a handful of people from EAC, a representative from Transport 2000, and a
planning student who spoke in favour of the moratorium and smart planning.

Folks, we spend a lot of time fighting for healthier communities, opposing
bad development, or advocating for more protected areas in HRM. Now we
have a chance to have all these objectives embedded in a framework; to
have a process which embodies the principles that we fight for on a daily
basis. The HRM may not have it all right and they may have made some
errors, but they were heading in the right direction, the direction we
have been encouraging them to head in. I say were. The developers are
knocking them back, challenging the whole notion of planning, and we are
largely nowhere to be seen.

We need the naturalists, the recreational anglers, health advocates,
planners, environmentalists, watershed people, cyclists, orienteers,
joggers, transit advocates, bird watchers, pesticide by-law supporters,
advocates for the disabled to get out and support the need for smart
planning. HRM's initiatives won't solve many of our problems but it will
give us a framework. Let's fight one big battle now rather than many small
battles over many years. Try to attend one of the next two meetings,
particularly the one in Beaverbank. Share your concerns with your
Councillors and Mayor. Attend the Public Hearing in March.

Public Consultation
Beaverbank, Feb. 19, 7:00-Sackville High School
Halifax West, Feb. 23, 7:00-283 Thomas Radall Drive, Hfx.
