Sierra Club of Canada's Atlantic Chapter takes on new Director of Operations

May 1, 2003 (Halifax, NS) - The Atlantic Canada Chapter of Sierra Club of
Canada today announced the hiring of Emily McMillan as the chapter's new
Director of Operations.

"We are very fortunate to have Emily joining our team," said Paul Schreenan,
Co-Chair of the Atlantic Chapter. "We know that her energy will help the
Chapter to grow in all four Atlantic provinces."

McMillan is a graduate of the School for Resource and Environmental Studies
at Dalhousie University, where she completed a Masters in Environmental
Studies focused on environmental education. She also holds a Bachelor of
Science in Biology and Environmental Studies from the University of New
Brunswick. She has been involved in the environmental movement for many
years, and has previously worked with the New Brunswick Environmental
Network and the Ecology Action Centre.

"I am very excited to be working with the Atlantic Chapter," said McMillan
"It is a wonderful opportunity to support the many dedicated volunteers of
the Sierra Club of Canada in Atlantic Canada. Working with the many
dedicated volunteers in the Atlantic Chapter makes me feel that I can really
make a difference in helping society to live in harmony with the earth."

Chapter Conservation Chair Mark Dittrick said, "Emily will be a breath of
fresh air for our organization. Her organizational skills will be a big
help in supporting our many campaigns around the region." Current campaigns
involve such diverse issues as oil and gas exploration, large-scale hog
farms, the Sydney Tar Ponds, the proposed basalt quarry on Nova Scotia's
Digby Neck and protecting the region's natural areas, such as the Maine
River in Newfoundland and the Tobeatic Wilderness Area in Nova Scotia.
Sierra Club of Canada is a volunteer-governed national environmental
organization.
