TUESDAY!!!

=======================================
URGENT NOTICE
PUBLIC HEARINGS ON THE SMOKING BYLAW
for 100% Smoke-Free Public Areas
TUESDAY, April 1, starting at 6:00 PM.

WHERE: Halifax Regional Council Chambers in City Hall (at one end of the
Grand Parade, bordered by Duke, Barrington and Argyle Streets).

The entire evening is reserved for these hearings [Item 8.1 on the Agenda].
Council held their regular meeting in the afternoon, so the hearing starts
at 6:00 pm.

WHAT: Speakers are allowed 3-5minutes to speak, but just stating that you
support the bylaw would be enough, and that the province did not go far
enough in protecting the health of our workers and our community. COUNCIL
SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND FOLLOW THE CLEAR ADVICE OF THE MEDICAL
COMMUNITY.

Consider bringing a summary of your talk (or notes) to hand in, in case the
session must be ended before all can speak. This is NOT required, but it
would insure that your ideas become part of the official record. Just
submit them "as read" (or "as viewed," if it is visual material).

Even if you do not wish to speak, your presence in Council will send a
strong message. PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT THE SMOKING BYLAW. This cannot be
done without your help.

Also, come early if you can [at least a half hour] as it is important to
fill the municipal council chambers upstairs with people who support 100%
Smoke-Free Public Spaces, not the opposition.

There is no pre-registration for municipal hearings. If you are unable to
get a chance to speak, and additional hearings are scheduled, you can add
your name to the overflow list by calling the Clerk's office (490-4210), so
that your name will be called before those who have not been waiting as
long.

YOUR PRESENCE AT THE HEARING WILL HELP COUNCIL MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE.
LET THEM KNOW THIS COMMUNITY VALUES HEALTH.

Phone calls, emails and especially letters sent by regular mail are also
very important. If you address your letter “Dear Mayor and Councillors,”
the city will send copies to the entire council for you.
Write to Mayor Peter Kelly and Councillors
Halifax Regional Municipality, P.O. Box 1749
Halifax, N.S. B3J 3A5
Or send an email to <kellyp@region.halifax.ns.ca>
Any phone number can be obtained from the Councillor's support office-
490-4050.
