Dear Sustainable Maritimers, I thought i'd let you know that Halifax's community and campus radio station, CKDU 97.5 FM, is currently doing some fundraising. CKDU has provided a vibrant alternative to the mainstream media for many years now, this is our 18th annual funding drive. All CKDU volunteers and staff are asking everyone they know in the community to help us raise fifty thousand dollars to keep the station going for another year. CKDU provides a wide diversity of programming that is aired 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Here's a selection of a few of the shows that might be of interest to people concerned about environmental issues: -Sounds Delicious - food politics, 5-6pm on Mondays -Bare Facts - native issues and music, 6-7pm Mondays -Creighton Street - a spoken word show that covers a variety of issues, Wednesdays 8:30am -Agenda - identity issues and politics, 7pm Wednesdays -Wallflower's Revenge, 3-5pm Wednesday, has a weekly farm report about ecological farming adventures -Black Roots and Culture - 2-3:30pm Thursday -Guerilla Radio - social justice and environmental issues, 5pm Thursdays That's just a few of many shows, there's lots of music shows too. The station provides a forum where many community groups can be heard as guests on shows or by creating their own shows. (The Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op now has a weekly show called Kino Pravda -cinema of the mind -Wednesday at 5:30.) To encourage you to pledge your support, all sorts of prizes are offered and you don't actually need to pay your pledge right away. That way there is some time to set aside some money. And you can look forward to your visit to the prize room when you are ready to pay up. For a 50$ pledge you get a t-shirt, a friends of CKDU discount card that gets you 10% off at various local businesses, and 50$ worth of CDs and/or books from the prize room. For a 25 $ pledge you get the friends card, and 25$ worth of prizes. Some folks prefer to avoid the prizes when they donate and that's fine, but there are often healthy prizes such as organically grown garlic or locally gathered honey that may tempt you. The on-air portion of funding drive runs from Friday Jan 24th until Sunday Feb 2nd. You can tune in then and call in your pledge. Lots of interesting prizes are offered on air. Programmers are also looking for advance pledges. (I encourage you to e-mail me with an advance pledge that can go towards the minimum of 800 $ i have to raise for my show!) My show is called Wallflower's Revenge, it airs 3-5pm on Wednesday afternoons. I've been producing this show for about 5 years. I play folk and old time or alternative country music. There is also a weekly farm report where i talk about some of my experiences in the part of Hants county where i work on an organic farm and visit lots of other farms. CKDU needs to raise one third of its operating budget during the next few weeks. 50,0000 dollars is a lot to raise but if many people make donations of amounts between 5 to 50 dollars, or even more, then it all adds up. Thank you for your support, Lyse Boyce, on behalf of CKDU 97.5 FM in Halifax -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- SUST-MAR TIP: messages to sust-mar must be plain text format (no HTML) -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
