Ecotourism Internship – Canada and Jamaica

The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is a unique
coalition of Atlantic Canadian organizations working on international
development and cooperation issues, working together to achieve sustainable
global development in a peaceful and healthy environment, with social
justice, human dignity, and participation for all.

We support our members in development and developmental education through
collective leadership, networking, information, training and coordination,
and represent their interests when dealing with government and others.  We
currently have 37 members, including national organizations and grassroots
organizations from across the Atlantic Provinces.

This internship is available through a funding partnership with Falls Brook
Centre (FBC), one of ACIC’s member organizations.  The intern will,
therefore, be included within some of FBC’s orientation training.  The
successful applicant will also live on FBC property, with FBC’s interns and
some of FBC’s staff.  FBC is an environmental community development
demonstration and training centre in rural New Brunswick. Located on 400
acres of farm and forestland, FBC demonstrates the practical application and
implementation of sustainable development.  For more information, please see

Funding for this program has been made available is through the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) Youth Employment Strategy Program

The intern will spend half of their internship in Jamaica with ACIC’s
partner, the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT).  NEPT is a
non-governmental, umbrella, membership organization whose mission is to
promote, coordinate, facilitate and implement ridge to reef conservation for
sustainable development within the Negril Environmental Protection Area.


Job Description

Summary
The intern will spend 12 weeks in Canada, working with ACIC’s Coordinator on
projects ranging from office management to a public engagement project
promoting culturally and environmentally appropriate travel and tourism.

With our partner in Jamaica, the intern will work for 12 weeks developing
interpretive materials, visitor guidelines and recommendations for
management to ensure the compatibility of The Royal Palm Reserve Ecotourism
Attraction activities with sound ecotourism principles.


Responsibilities

Canadian component
The young professional will be involved with all aspects of the daily
operations of the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC),
including:
·	Assistance with ACIC’s public engagement project, promoting culturally and
environmentally appropriate travel and tourism;
·	Facilitating partnership development of member organizations;
·	Website development and maintenance;
·	Membership database maintenance;
·	Marketing of ACIC and services;
·	Newsletter editing and layout; and,
·	Professional development workshop organization.

Jamaica component:
The Royal Palm Reserve Ecotourism Attraction provides NEPT with a direct
avenue for achieving its mission by serving as a focal point for sustainable
income generation, environmental education and research, and community
development.  The Eco-Tourism Development Volunteer will be responsible for
developing interpretive materials, updating communication materials (e.g.,
the website and newsletter), visitor guidelines and recommendations for
management to ensure the compatibility of Reserve activities with sound
Eco-Tourism principles.


Responsibilities
·	Assist with updating NEPT’s website and communication materials.
·	Assist with implementing and monitoring interpretive program, which
professionally and effectively serves to inform the visiting public about
environmental characteristics of the Royal Palm Reserve and surrounding
environs.
·	Develop signage and pamphlet, which will inform the public about safe and
responsible travel within the property.
·	Assist with the development of guidelines for sustainable tourism
practices at NEPT.
·	Assist with implementing guidelines and determining opportunities for
mitigation of negative effects.
·	Liaise with other sustainable tourism projects in Negril to determine
opportunities for partnership on sustainable tourism issues.



Qualifications

CIDA requires the intern:
·	Be aged 30 or under;
·	Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant able to work in Canada;
·	Be currently under or unemployed;
·	Have not previously worked outside Canada in a paid, career-related
position;
·	Be a graduate of a college or university; and,
·	Have not previously participated in another Internship Program funded by
the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

The ideal candidate will have:
·	Familiarity with ACIC, its goals and programs;
·	Knowledge of ecotourism issues;
·	Interest in international cooperation and sustainable development, as well
as organizational management and coordination.
·	Familiarity and/or experience with the development of interpretive
programs and an ability to review extensive literature and data in the
development of said program;
·	Proven skills in project management;
·	Ability to prioritize and effectively handle many demands;
·	Proven computer skills including MS Word, MS Publisher, e-mail, internet,
and spreadsheet development, all within a PC environment;
·	Excellent website development and management skills;
·	Attention to detail;
·	Ability to take initiative;
·	Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
·	Must be available to travel and work on a few evenings and week-ends;
·	Previous travel or overseas study experience, especially in Jamaica, would
be an asset;
·	Flexibility in work and living environments; and,
·	Full fluency in English and French.


SALARY AND BENEFITS

Stipend: $200 per week.
Please note that you will not be eligible for Employment Insurance after the
internship.

*	Other potential training courses as opportunities become available.

Please note you will be required to pay a weekly room and board rental fee
to Falls Brook Centre, if you choose to live on-site.  Accommodation Costs
at Falls Brook Centre (includes a basic, furnished room, heat, electricity,
and water):  May 1 - September 15: $65/week, September 16 - April 30:
$80/week.  Cost of lunches at Falls Brook Centre:  $30 for 5 lunches
provided by the Centre.  (All interns who live on-site must take part in
this.)

The Intern will also be responsible for paying their living expenses while
overseas.

If you have a student loan, it may be possible to defer payment during the
course of your internship.


DURATION:  24 weeks – 12 weeks in Canada with ACIC and 12 weeks in Jamaica
with NEPT

LOCATION:  Rural New Brunswick (Falls Brook Centre, Knowlesville) and
Negril, Jamaica.    Please note: Knowlesville, NB, is a very remote, rural
environment.  You must have the ability to feel comfortable with wood heat,
spring water, and a rural living experience.

CLOSING DATE:  December 27, 2002

STARTING DATE:  January 20, 2003
