The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) Presents:

***EFFECTIVELY WORKING WITH RESULTS BASED MANAGEMENT***

Results Based Management (RBM) is a management philosophy and approach which
emphasizes a clear statement of results (what is to be accomplished) at each
stage of the project cycle. An RBM approach allows all participants to be
aware of and understand what they are accountable for at each stage of the
project. By having clearly defined indicators, participants can keep track
of how the project is progressing and make in-course adjustments as required
to achieve the ultimate development impact. With this approach there are no
surprises as each has agreed on their contribution at the planning stage.

Results-Based Management (RBM) includes:
1.	Defining realistic expected results based on appropriate analysis.
2.	Clearly identifying program beneficiaries and designing programs to meet
their needs.
3.	Monitoring progress towards results with the use of appropriate
indicators.
4.	Identifying and managing risks.
5.	Increasing knowledge by learning lessons and integrating them into
decisions.
6.	Reporting on results achieved and the resources involved.

This workshop will be presented by Angela Patterson, of Angelhoeve
Associates Inc. Working domestically and internationally, Ms. Patterson's
areas of expertise are cross-sectoral and include policy development;
planning; capacity development, facilitation of organizational change; the
creation of the learning organization; training systems development and
implementation; institutional strengthening; women in trades and technology,
conflict resolution and inter-personal communications.

Ms. Patterson's experience with RBM comes from 10 years on CIDA staff as the
Institutional and Human Resources Development Specialist for South Asia
(India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh). During that time she was
involved in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of in
excess of 50 projects. Many of these projects were of the older variety and
had to be re-fitted to an RBM approach. This involved extensive interaction
with project participants (CEAs, host nationals, beneficiaries) to allow
all to come to an understanding and agreement of how the project would
proceed using an RBM approach. Since leaving CIDA, Ms. Patterson has
conducted several results based evaluations and is currently a results-based
monitor of a technical education project in India.
