Deconstructing Supper is a new, one-hour documentary film hosted by Vancouver author and chef John Bishop. The film will premiere across Canada on VisionTV on Thursday, October 24 at 8:00 P.M. (ET) and will be repeated at 11:00 P.M. (ET) the same evening. There will also be a sneak preview benefit screening of the film, followed by a gourmet organic meal by John Bishop and live music at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, Vancouver, on Sunday October 20th at 7.00 P.M. All proceeds from the event to go to FarmFolk CityFolk and the women farmers of Pastapur village, India. Deconstructing Supper begins, innocently enough, with a clear, yet unexpected, question. A patron at Bishops, one of Vancouvers top restaurants, asks the owner, renowned Canadian chef John Bishop, whether his foods are "GM" (genetically modified). For Bishop, proud of his establishment and his culinary knowledge, the query is a revelation. Embarrassed, he admits that he doesnt know the answer. Although he uses mostly organically grown produce in his recipes, he realizes that he knows absolutely nothing about genetically modified foods: not what is in them, nor how they are grown. This seminal moment makes Bishop question his responsibility as a restaurateur and leads him on a personal odyssey to discover answers to the simple question: "what are our food choices?" For someone whose livelihood is constructing supper, Bishops incredible journey of discovery is one done in reverse: one of deconstruction. Deconstructing Supper leads viewers on an eye-opening and engaging adventure into the billion-dollar battle to control global food production. Starting with a gourmet meal in his five-star Vancouver restaurant, Bishop embarks on a long journey to unravel fact from fiction, and information from disinformation. With a hearty appetite for both food and information, chef Bishop explores the politics, economics and ethics of food. Are these foods safe? Are there other, less risky ways to feed ourselves? Bishop finds answers to these and other compelling questions. Bishops travels lead him from organic farms to biotechnology trade shows where corporate scientists claim the public is typically afraid of new developments they dont understand; from biotech laboratories where genetic engineers move genes between entirely different life-forms to supermarket aisles where Bishop learns that 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients, from watching masked activists illegally tear up genetically-modified crops to visits with angry farmers on the Canadian Prairies, embroiled in legal battles with giant multinational biotechnology companies like Monsanto. Filmmaker Marianne Kaplan chronicles Bishops learning curve as it takes him across Canada, to the U.S. and to England, where he discovers that in the UK and Europe public pressure has forced supermarkets to remove genetically modified products from their shelves (while here in North America, they remain on shelves not even labelled as GM). When the biotech firms repeatedly insist that they are feeding the hungry in developing countries, Bishop travels to faraway India to find out first-hand whether or not that is true, with startling results. For Bishop, the quest ends with his embracing the classic think globally, act locally philosophy. He returns to Vancouver a changed man. He now serves only organic food, avoids genetically modified foods in his Vancouver restaurant, and is planning to be part of an organic learning centre where young chefs can see how food is grown and where Bishop can share the insights he has learned. Deconstructing Supper is a remarkable trip every contemporary eater will want to take- a thought-provoking and entertaining journey into the revolution in modern food production - and its effects on our lives.
