Learning from Alberta: The Human and Environmental Cost of the Gas Industry Dr. Martha Kostuch, veterinarian and long-time critic of the oil and gas industry in Alberta, will be in Nova Scotia to describe her province's experience with the industry and offer lessons for Nova Scotia. Martha will cover the impacts of pipelines and processing plants on human and animal health and the environment, the regulation of the industry, and land expropriation. She will pay special attention to health and safety concerns, in particular the health impacts of sour gas. Martha has participated in many regulatory hearings in Alberta and in efforts to develop new standards for the industry. Martha will speak at the Dalhousie Law School, Room 105, on Monday, October 21 at 12:00 and at the Lockeport Fire Hall, in Lockeport, Shelburne County at 7:00 that evening. In Shelburne, Martha will focus on the impacts of the proposed El Paso pipeline and processing plant. In 2000, the oil company, EnCana discovered gas containing hydrogen sulphide or sour gas on the Scotian Shelf. Sour gas, which is as toxic as cyanide, kills at high concentrations and causes permanent brain damage even at low levels. El Paso, a U.S. pipeline company, is proposing a pipeline from East of Sable Island to New Jersey with the gas (including sour gas) coming ashore in Shelburne County for processing. -30- For more information please contact Mark Butler, Ecology Action Centre, 902-429-2202 Society for Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility at cesr@dal.ca Anne Smith, South West Environmental Protection Group, 902-875-3375 Chris Williams, South West Environmental Protection Group, 902-656-3489 -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- SUST-MAR is provided FREE by the Chebucto Community Net and YOU!
