Cob and Thatch Workshop Naturally Beautiful Buildings October 12 -13, 2002 Ship Harbour, Eastern Shore, N.S. Thatching with local phragmite reed is resurging as a viable, natural roofing solution in Nova Scotia. Jef Achenback and Perry Everett, Annapolis Thatching Co-op Inc., will look at benefits, tools and skills needed for this ancient trade. Participants will have hands-on thatching experience of a bale and cob shed. (Oct. 12) Cob is a mix of straw, clay and sand, similar to adobe, which, makes a durable, non toxic building material that has been in continuous use around the globe for hundreds of years. Kim Thompson of Straw Bale Projects, will explore several cob systems and how they can be incorporated into straw bale construction Natural clay plasters and paints will also be demonstrated. (Oct. 13) Lots of hands and feet on. Cost: $100 Includes both workshops, music making, and meals (one participant pot luck). Accommodation and camping available on site at the Straw House.
