A long standing dispute over land ownership in the Annapolis Valley has ended... Some of you may know that the Windsor and Hantsport Railway has been trying for years to extend their rail network back down the Valley from New Minas to at least the CFB Greenwood Base. Their attempts have been thwarted several times by Kentville Town Council over running rights through the old railbed in Kentville which would involve two road crossing grades in the Town on original railroad land. For years, ownership of the land has been disputed but this issue has finally been settled last week when the province acquired the land rights from the Trans Canada Trail Foundation for the entire 225 kilometres of abandoned railbed to Yarmouth. Ministers Tim Olive and Rodney MacDonald are attempting to quickly develop this land as a walking and recreation trail and if this is allowed to happen, the railroad will not have access to this land or be able to expand to take trucks off the road. Some of the potential cargo that is on the road now that can be shifted back to rail more efficiently is Michelin products from Waterville, Food products from Coldbrook at ScotiaGold, Fuel and hazardous materials from Greenwood base, Fertilizer at Middleton. Please take some time to support Transport 2000 Atlantic in our bid to place dangerous cargo where it belongs, on the rails, and help us create a sustainable transportation model in the Annapolis Valley. Write letters to John Hamm, Tim Olive, and Rodney MacDonald, in support of sustainable transportation. It is easier to construct/relocate a walking trail than it is to move a railbed...
