The South Shore Pesticide Reduction Action Group is often asked for a good, inexpensive how-to manual for healthy lawn and garden care. We've found one, and are now selling it as a fundraiser for our organization. "How to get your lawn and garden off drugs: pesticide-free gardening for a healthier environment" by B.C. author Carole Rubin is now available by mail order directly from SSPRAG. All proceeds from book sales go directly towards our public education activities. This concise (98 pages), clearly-written gem gives you all the information you need to keep your lawn and garden healthy without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. It includes sections on preventing and coping with chinch bug, white grub and other common insect invasions, as well as measures for preventing and dealing with bacterial and fungal diseases. For those who already take care of their properties organically, this is a great reference book to have on hand. It also makes a wonderful gift for those who need encouragement to make the change to sustainable lawn care practices. Consider buying a copy for your pesticide-using neighbours, relatives or friends. To receive your copy, please send a cheque for $12.50 to: SSPRAG R.R.#1 LaHave, N.S. The South Shore Pesticide Reduction Action Group (SSPRAG) is a registered not-for-profit society, formed in February 2000 to raise awareness of the dangers of pesticides used for cosmetic purposes. We believe that everyone has the right to live, work and travel in communities free from harmful chemical pesticides. To that end, we encourage individuals, organizations, businesses, governments and others in the counties of Lunenburg and Queens to eliminate pesticides from their properties and communities, and adopt more healthful practices of lawn, garden and property care. SSPRAG's mandate is supported by the Nova Scotia College of Family Physicians, the Medical Society of Nova Scotia, the Chief Medical Officers for the Western and Central Regional Health Boards, and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. We welcome members from across Nova Scotia. Membership is $10 per year per family. This fee goes directly to covering our administrative and materials costs, photocopying, postage and other expenses; all our work is done by volunteers.
