Sustainable Living Workshop: Earth Plaster a Strawbale Building The Nappan Project is offering an earth plaster and cob workshop led by strawbale builder and teacher Kim Thompson July 5-7 2002, in Nappan, (near Amherst), Nova Scotia. Strawbale construction is an example of sustainable living through use of appropriate building technology and materials. If you are interested in learning about constructing an environmentally friendly and cost efficient home, this is your opportunity for some hands on with one of the most experienced strawbale builders in Atlantic Canada. History, systems, design and permitting involved with strawbale buildings will be introduced with most of the hands on being focusing on plastering existing straw bale walls. Schedule: The workshop weekend will begin with a slide show intro to strawbale building on Friday night (July 5). Saturday and Sunday will be a combination of theoretical and hands on learning. After completing straw detailing of a strawbale greenhouse begun last year, participants will mix and apply a natural earth plaster to the bales. This material is an adobe like mixture of sand, clay and straw often referred to as "cob". Kim will demonstrate cob application and discuss different types of plaster as well as techniques for shaping cob niches, bevels and relief / design touches. Workshop information: Participants: The workshop can accommodate between 6 and 15 participants. Price: will vary according to the number of participants, with a maximum of 150$ per person (includes the workshop and meals).
