The Marine Animal Response Society The Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that is dedicated to assisting marine animals in distress. Our waters are home to many species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), seals, sea turtles and seabirds. Included in these are several threatened species such as the harbour porpoise and even some of the most endangered animals on earth such as the North Atlantic right whale and the leatherback turtle. They come here to mate, feed and give birth and unfortunately, sometimes are hurt or trapped and need help. We ensure the welfare of stranded live animals and support scientific research through documentation of stranding reports and sample collection. Dead or live-stranded animals, animals seen floating, or animals caught in fishing gear (whether killed, released alive, or trailing gear) are recorded through the Society. These records are important in helping to understand the biology of these animals as well as to determine general distribution patterns and causes of death. A major component of the society’s efforts are dedicated to provide educational outreach. We aim to promote public awareness of marine animals and issues concerning their welfare through information sessions and educational programs. MARS collaborates with a number of other organizations including the Leatherback Turtle Working Group, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the NS Museum of Natural History and Dalhousie University. However, it is through the dedication and hard work of its volunteers, especially the people in our communities, that MARS has been and will continue to be successful. Volunteers are an invaluable component of MARS. We require the assistance of volunteers from all parts of Nova Scotia. If you are interested in volunteering for this society, would like more information or if you see a marine animal in distress (or dead), contact us at 1-866-567-6277 or email nsmars@hotmail.com As well, for those that are interested, there will be a marine animal rehabilitation workshop from 8-5pm on April 27th at Dalhousie University. If you are interested in attending, please let us know and we will send you the agenda. Cheers, Tonya Wimmer President, MARS -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- SUST-MAR TIP: messages to sust-mar must be plain text format (no HTML) -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
