Dear Sust-Mar list, I just heard on CBC radio that on Thurs. April 4 there will be a public forum on CBC radio at the Lord Nelson in Halifax at 7PM. The panel will be composed of Costas Halavrezos, Alex Frame, Adrian Mills and Susan Mitton. Over the years I've come to truly appreciate how lucky we are to have the CBC. Of course it is not immune from passing on misinformation or from getting caught up in squabble politics when there are much more vital political issues to report on (or from taking action against journalists (eg. Terry Milewski) who somehow do not toe the corporate line). But without it, we would be much worse off, of that I'm sure. We must not take it for granted and we must work to keep it as independent as possible. So, I hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to protect one of the strong points of Canada's democratic tradition. To help others remember things they might want to comment on, I'll make my own list below. - After the Dec. 6 "Montreal massacre" of 14 women, Morningside held a special forum to help people find a positive way to take in a pick up from the tragedy. I realized most media would have gotten stuck on the sensationalist aspects of such an event, and was profoundly grateful for this opportunity for us to share our mourning and to learn from the tragedy. - In various ways, the CBC helps promote awareness of and love for nature. This morning I gather they interviewed a biologist on the subject of lichens. Add to that the CBC news briefs Paul has been kind enough to retrieve and send to this list or the Ideas series on the oceans (http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/ideas/-oceans/). And there are call-in shows with their wildlife biologist, Suzuki programs, etc. as well. - Oh yes, the excellent coverage by Halifax CBC radio of the DU (depleted uranium) and Gulf War vets story, a story which was eventually picked up by national TV as well. - Or other things the government would surely have yanked off the air if it could have, such as former Health Minister Alan Rock's expressions of extreme annoyance when anti-GMO activists managed to get to him as he was doing an interview on PEI... (Those PEI activists (eg. Aaron Koleszar) sure have made good use of the CBC:-) There may be people like me, who cannot go to the forum on Thursday evening, but who would like to participate anyhow.
