FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 18, 2002 WALKERTON REPORT A WAKE-UP CALL FOR FEDS - NDP'S COMARTIN OTTAWA - NDP environment critic Joe Comartin called the Walkerton Water Report a stark wake-up call for the federal government. "The federal government must share some of the blame and take steps to ensure that tragedies like Walkerton are prevented in the future," Mr. Comartin said. Environment Canada underwent the largest cuts of any federal department between 1995 and 1999 with an overall decline in funding to nearly half of what it was in 1991-92. The report cites cuts in the provincial environment ministry as one of the factors contributing to the contamination of Walkerton's water supply, which resulted in an E.coli epidemic in May 2000 that infected thousands and resulted in seven deaths. "Whether failing to implement national water standards, gutting the Canadian Environmental Protection Act or slashing department budgets, this government has shown a total disregard for the environment and the health of Canadians," said Mr. Comartin. "The suffering of the people of Walkerton is tragic but the greater tragedy is that it could have been prevented," the NDP MP said. The NDP has repeatedly called on the federal government to implement a national water strategy establishing clear and enforceable national standards for safe drinking water. -30- For more information: Joe Comartin (613) 947-3446 or (519) 988-1826 www.ndp.ca -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- SUST-MAR TIP: our archives are http://www.chebucto.ca/lists/sust-mar CBC enviro news-briefs follow: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- PULP COMPANIES TELL NSP 'PROVE IT' Two pulp companies are telling Nova Scotia Power to prove it.
