FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 22, 2002 FEDS MUST COME CLEAN ON THE REAL COST OF KYOTO AND RATIFY ACCORD SAYS NDP OTTAWA - NDP environment critic Joe Comartin called on Federal Environment Minister David Anderson to refute the baseless claims of Alberta's Ralph Klein and other Kyoto critics and once and for all commit to ratification by June. "David Anderson is all talk and no action. Two weeks ago, he was going to ratify by June now he wants a debate on whether to ratify." said Comartin. "The federal government must stop its foot-dragging on Kyoto and send a strong message to opponents once and for all and get on with implementation," said Comartin. The federal government has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks from industry lobby groups and some provinces to back off its commitment to ratify the Kyoto Accord on climate change. "When you do the math it is clear that the economic models touted by Alberta and the industry lobby are grossly misleading," Mr. Comartin said. Last summer, Ralph Klein said Kyoto would cost 'trillions' - a figure higher than Canada's entire GDP. "Their predictions, as well as those of the federal government, are fundamentally flawed in that they fail to take into account the very real costs of not acting to reduce the harmful effects of climate change on our economy," said Comartin. "They completely ignore the enormous cost climate change is having on health care, agriculture, the fishery and forestry industries to name just a few." "The federal government must make clear to Canadians the enormous cost of not implementing Kyoto and get on with combating climate change," concluded the NDP MP. -30- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- SUST-MAR TIP: copyright material cannot be posted to the list CBC enviro news-briefs follow: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- MORE SOIL TESTS RELEASED TO PUBLIC NEXT WEEK More soil test results are about to be made public on the extent of soil contamination in the industrial Cape Breton area.
