Transport 2000 Atlantic began a letter campaign today to try and protect the Maritimes from seeing a 40% slash to service that is soon coming. Please take some time today to write an e-mail or send a letter to your MP or MLA and help us avoid another cut to this service. I have already contacted 2 Nova Scotia Senators, 3 of the traditional political parties, David Collenette (Federal Minister of Transportation), and Prime Minister Chretien. To date, the Prime Minister has been the only one who responded which I will post below. Please take a few minutes to go to Yahoo.ca where you can get a direct link to the government and MPs as well as MLAs and you can e-mail them directly. Thank you again for your time. Tim Doyle Board Member Transport 2000 Atlantic Thank you very much for your quick correspondence. Please understand I know that Minister Collenette is responsible for this area of policy in Canada. I have chosen to ask for the Prime Minister's help in this particular instance because it is an urgent matter and Minister Collenette will look into the issue a little closer if the Prime Minister tells him to do so. Other people are contacting David Collenette as we speak, regarding this issue. It is much appreciated that you have forwarded this issue on my behalf to the Minister in charge. By taking this to the PMO first I have indicated my level of urgency so again, please look into this matter very closely so that the Maritime provinces (at least the ones with a railway), aren't taking any more punishment for their continued use of this national service. Sincerely and with gratitude, Tim Doyle >>> Dear D. Tim Doyle: On behalf of the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, I would like to thank you for your e-mail, in which you raised an issue that falls within the portfolio of the Honourable David Collenette, Minister of Transport. Please be assured that the statements you made have been carefully reviewed. I have taken the liberty of forwarding your e-mail to Minister Collenette, so that he too may be made aware of your comments. I am certain that the Minister will give your views every consideration. L.A. Lavell Executive Correspondence Officer Agent de correspondance de la haute direction >>> "Doyle, Tim" <Tim.Doyle@freedom55financial.com> 11-01-02 11:03:13 AM >>> Attention Prime Minister Chretien, This past week, Via rail announced cuts of 40% to service in the Maritimes. They are transferring our stainless steel cars to the west for tourists and giving us a reduced number of European cars. Cuts are what I expect to hear in a recession even though it doesn't really feel like other recessions...but we have on average over 70% capacity on our trains and many are sold out since September 11th. Those are higher than averages from Ontario and the Corridor region! At times like these we should be offering people more choices for rail travel, increased routes to travel, increased frequencies. Instead, we subsidize the air industry and continue to ignore Via rail. Likewise, Via rail, the Central Canadian Crown Corporation, continues to ignore Maritime Canadians. As Prime Minister, you are the policy maker for this country. We aren't asking for anything more than our share of a national service. Please take some time to save Via rail for Atlantic Canadians and increase and enhance the service. It will pay dividends long into the future with jobs, a cleaner environment, and choices other than the price gouging Air Canada. It also builds communities and links places that otherwise are only separate entities that have been forgotten by everyone else. Thank you for your consideration. D.
