The Bike Again! Community Initiative has had a successful first year. Over
150 bicycles have been repaired and distributed to people who did not have
access to their own bike. The project started at the Brunswick Street
United Church as the Yellow Bike Program and last year TIC (the
Transportation Issues Committee), an EAC sub-committee, took hold of the
reigns and the Bike Again! Community Initiative was born.

A group of Bike Again! volunteers set up a workshop space in the Bloomfield
Community Centre and began organizing the donated bicycle parts. Since then
we have managed to fix 150 old bikes and have gotten more people pedalling
on the road. Approximately sixty percent of the recycled bikes have been
given to new Canadians through MISA, twenty-five percent to students, ten
percent to the general public and five percent to organizations. The bike
recipients have been asked to sign a waiver form and use the bicycle as long
as they need it. "I haven't used a bicycle since I was about fourteen
living with my family in Afghanistan. Now I ride my bike everywhere. It is
good to get me to English school and to get food at the store. Thank you
for the bike and the new freedom." (Abdul Hadi)

All of this good work has been done by the efforts of a handful of dedicated
volunteers and a few small donations. The Bike Again! volunteers are
motivated to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote bicycling.

If you wish to get involved in the Bike Again! Community Initiative, contact
Susanna Drake Fuller at 453-9228 sdfuller@is2.dal.ca or Melissa Taylor at
melissa@misa.ns.ca. We are looking for a few things to help us to continure
this amazing project. Some items on our wish list include: salvagable
bicycles, financial donations, bicycle mechanics, and a new workshop space.
