Hi Paul, I know the following should have gone out in sierra-news but the
action wasn't confirmed until today and time does not permit. Please
forgive me and post it to sust-mar. Thanks, Cyndi

Stop Fortis from building a dam in Belize!
Friday November 30, 11am

Dress up as tapir, a jaguar, or a scarlet macaw and win a prize!

Background Info:
Fortis Inc. of St. John's Newfoundland plans to build a 30-million-dollar,
35-metre hydroelectric dam that will flood about 800 hectares in the western
interior of Belize.

This tragedy of globalization will destroy the habitat destroy one of the
most biologically diverse areas in Central America and disrupt the habitat
of endangered species of more than a dozen rare or endangered species
including howler monkeys, tapirs, jaguars, and scarlet macaws as well as
inundate unexplored relics of the ancient Maya civilization.
The government of Belize, through its National Environmental Appraisal
Committee (NEAC), has given Fortis clearance to the dam by accepting the
Environmental Impact Assessment report. NEAC dismissed the main
recommendation from Fortis's own wildlife consultants, the British Natural
History Museum, who stated that the dam should not be built because it will
devastate Belize wildlife and migratory bird populations. The Canadian
government, through CIDA, is contibuting $250,000 for this same report.

Stand in solidarity with the four hundred people who gathered earlier this
month in Belize's capital, Belmopan, to protest against the dam and Fortis's
electricity monopoly, which has Belizeans paying three times what Canadians
pay for electricity.
