Environmental Economist
Term Position - 5 months

The Southeast Environmental Association (SEA) is a multi-stakeholder
community group concerned about the environmental, social and economic
well-being of residents of South Eastern PEI. SEA carries out research,
education and small scale action projects to improve the environmental
quality of the local area, while building the capacity and knowledge level
of residents.

Environmental Damages Assessment (EDA) is a newly emerging framework in
Atlantic Canada, that can be used to evaluate, quantify and monetize
injuries or loss of natural resources due to a pollution event. One of the
issues that arose from the framework's application was the need for standard
protocols for assessing injuries sustained by the affected ecosystem.
Macroinvertebrates are important components of the aquatic ecosystem because
they serve as a food source to fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. They
also provide a vital link in the food web between primary trophic levels and
top consumers. Incorporating macroinvertebrates into EDA protocols enables
investigators to determine how this vital link in the food chain is affected
from a pollution event. This continued development of EDA protocol addresses
a need to move towards ecosystems-based approaches within the environmental
damage assessment framework.
