Dr. Hughes probably knows more about transit than anyone in Nova Scotia. I
can't dispute his facts. I join him in calling on HRM to invest more in
transit.

However, I see no reason why infrequent service, or low ridership, makes
bike racks a less desirable feature for public transit. If anything, those
factors highlight the need to attract riders.

In San Francisco, I saw bike racks on bus routes that were serviced every
30 minutes. They were alternated: approximately every other bus had a
rack. So, once an hour there was a bus with a rack. Once an hour is
better than never.

Imagine if Metro Transit Route 15 had bike racks. If cyclists could take
their bikes to York Redout once per hour, we could get a lot closer to
places like Purcell's Cove. We wouldn't need cars to explore that part of
the shore. Or we could bike to Williams Lake, and get a lift back on the
bus. I'm sure sust-mar readers can suggest other routes where bike racks
would be very effective.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. What does one bike rack cost? Maybe
private individuals, or corporations could sponsor racks. I would donate
$200 towards bike racks for Metro Transit. After all, not owning a car is
saving me $8000 per year (according to the CAA).

A word from our lawyers ...

Don't forget ... COPYRIGHT material, such as newspaper/magazine articles
cannot be posted on sust-mar without the owner's permission. It's against
the law. CROSS-POSTINGS (messages from other lists) are also discouraged.

In either case, why not tell us something about the issue in your own
words? Or ... send a clipping along with the URL where the original can be
found, or directions how to join the list it came from?

Takes a few more minutes, but makes for a more interesting sust-mar ... :)
