Greetings all! Point Pleasant Park and the cutting of trees are back in the news again. Those of you who continue to be interested in this topic may wish to take a look at a new article of mine which Dalhousie University's on-line journal, Biotype has just published in it's June issue. It is thorough rebuttal of Anthony Ricciardi's attack on the position of environmental groups in relation to this issue. It is also an examination of a number of the salient biological issues related to the BSLB, as well as considering matters pertaining to the intersection of science and public policy, questions on what constitutes a pest, and how to apply the precautionary principle. The article is entitled "Straw Men and Missed Opportunities" and is available at: http://biotype.biology.dal.ca/biotype/2001/jun01/cmajka.html I hope it represents both an ecological and environmental perspective on this issue. Best wishes, Christopher Majka -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list (sust-mar). http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/lists/sust-mar -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Volunteer moderator: Paul Falvo mailto:sust-mar-owner@chebucto.ns.ca To submit a message to sust-mar, please send it to: mailto:sust-mar@chebucto.ns.ca PLEASE SEND MESSAGES TO SUST-MAR IN PLAIN TEXT ONLY MESSAGES CONTAINING HTML (MIME) CANNOT BE POSTED
