Please see below a message on proposed suburban development in Prospect (which has been able to maintain a chatracter of a small fishing village up to now), as well as schedule of Community Meetings on Non-Resident Land Ownwership. ***** The following notice has been distributed to Prospect area residents by the Prospect Peninsula Residents Association and the Friends of High Head. If you care about the loss of undeveloped coastal areas in HRM please contact one, or all of the individuals listed below. PROSPECT HIGH HEAD THREATENED BY LAND SALE Prospect High Head is in danger of being turned into a subdivision. A 120-acre parcel of High Head land owned by Janet Stevens of Ottawa is being sold to a private developer. The land includes the wetlands immediately to the right as you cross Mullins Brook and 45 acres of coastline. The land could be subdivided into as many as 35 building lots. To understand the impact of such a development, imagine the path to the High Head turned into a roadway for cars. Imagine Mullins Brook running through a culvert and the High Head covered with houses. Residents of the Prospect Peninsula have been working for more than 15 years to have the High Head protected. The Municipal Planning Strategy developed for the area in the 1980s identified the High Head as an ecologically sensitive and endangered area that should be targeted for preservation. The Nature Conservancy joined the effort in 1999, and only weeks ago, the province granted the Conservancy title to 250 acres of crown land on the High Head. The Nature Conservancy has been negotiating for the privately owned land, but a developer offered more money. However, there is still time to prevent the loss of the High Head to development. If our politicians know the majority of residents oppose this land being developed, the province and the municipality can still step in and take action. Contact the following people immediately and let them know you oppose development on the High Head: Councillor Gary Meade Phone 902-826-3336 fax 902-826-3337 maedeg@region.halifax.ns.ca Mayor Peter Kelly tel. 902-490-4010 fax 902-490-4012 kellyp@region.halifax.ns.ca Hon.
